Room 4:The Unknown

Something between my mouth and your ear
Something...     1994
Douglas Gordon

This piece offers an insight into the formation of the artist’s character and the build up of their character. The work made by contemporary artist Douglas Gordon is a single blue room which alters colour according to the time in the day and the intensity of light outside these four walls. On the floor is a unit playing songs that Gordon may have heard, these are chosen by the artist from the top 50 that his mother may have listened to whilst pregnant with him. It visually withholds a great deal of information yet makes comment on the development of a child, forming into an artist.

Stealth 1996
Hayley Newman

Performance artist Hayley Newman was said to have taken part in a durational performance, by jumping up and down on a trampoline for three hours. Yet there is only one picture to document this performance, and no evidence to say it actually happened, the result being one photograph and a statement from the artist.

“Prior to the event I had instructed its organiser to enter at any point during the three-hour performance and take a single photograph with a flash to document the work. This is the only image of the work as no other photography was allowed.” Hayley Newman

Yves Klein
Saut dans le vide
(Leap into the void) 1960

One of Klein’s most famous per formative photographs show him jumping of a wall, arms outstretched and heading straight for the pavement. The photograph was originally published in the artist’s book Dimanche producing works scoped by the idea of “le vide” The void, a state that is void of worldly influences for example reality.
